Blue Mountain Community Foundation awards grants, scholarships

The Blue Mountain Community Foundation recently awarded $44,595 in grants and scholarships for Umatilla County nonprofit organizations and students in 2016.

The grants, totaling $21,600, were awarded under the foundation’s Discretionary Grants program. These organizations or programs are in Pendleton, Hermiston, Milton-Freewater, Athena, Weston, Pilot Rock and Stanfield. The grants were approved during the Foundation’s Sept. 20 board of trustees meeting. The recipients include:

Arts Council of Pendleton, $1,000 for arts education; Blue Mountain Wildlife, $3,000 for educational outreach; Children’s Museum of Eastern Oregon, $1,000 for educational programming; Clearview Mediation and Disability Resource Center, $3,000 to improve transportation of disabled people; College Community Theatre (at Blue Mountain Community College), $1,300 for 2017 summer youth camp; New Directions Education Project, $1,000 for inmate education at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution; Oregon East Symphony & Chorale, $1,500 for Young People’s Concert; Pioneer Humane Society, $800 to replace washer and dryer; Inland Northwest Musicians, $1,000 for chorale concerts in Pendleton and Milton-Freewater; Umatilla-Morrow Head Start Inc., $500 for Cooking Matters classes; city of Athena, $5,000 for improvements to swimming pool; East Umatilla County Health Department, $2,000 for new hydraulic gurney; and Milton-Freewater Downtown Alliance, $500 for 2017 Cinco de Mayo.

Scholarships totaling $22,995 were given to 19 students (class of 2016 as well as returning college students):

HERMISTON: Estala Fuentes, Andrea Gispert Tello, Sofia Gispert Tello, Laura Zepeda

WESTON-MCEWEN: Megan Coffman, Caleb Conner, Juniper Cosner, Anne Gilsdorf, Jessica Lambert, Alyxander Shaw

PILOT ROCK: Clancy Deutz, Megan Glynn

STANFIELD: Madeline Griffin, Coralia Rojas

MILTON-FREEWATER: Elise Griffith, Brooke Kralman

For more than 30 years, the Blue Mountain Community Foundation has worked to strengthen the health of communities in the Walla Walla Valley. It has grown to more than $39 million in assets and has over 300 charitable funds directed to benefit the people of Garfield, Columbia and Walla Walla counties in Washington and Umatilla County in Oregon. The foundation distributes nearly $2 million in grants and scholarships each year.
